Everything that can come back and bite you in the butt for stealing--------------
So you’re sitting at the head of your dining room table, cake in front of you, and surrounded by loved ones, all anticipating the exciting moment when you open your gifts. And you’re just as exhilarated as they are. You can’t wait to see what they got you, your mom especially, since you’ve dropped hints of what you wanted in the weeks leading up to this moment. You smile as she approaches the table, a gift wrapped box in her hands. You can hardly contain yourself. You feel like you’re going to burst, you’re so happy!
Once you’ve blown the candles out, she pushes the cake aside and sets your gift on the placemat in front of you. Her smile is as wide as yours. She’s so proud as she watches you tear the wrapping paper. And she’s still smiling even when your expression suddenly changes. You’re no longer the excited kid who had been looking forward to this day all week. Your disappointment is all too apparent as you stare down as the new set of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” books before you. But you put the happy face back on, practically cringing, but you try.
“It’s one of the more popular series for young readers,” your mom says.
“Oh… thanks.” You don’t want to sound unappreciative. But you still want to raise the subject of her not getting what you wanted when you thought for certain she knew.
“I know you’ll love it,” she says with enthusiasm.
“Yeah… me too.”
“You look upset.”
“No, I just thought…”
“Oh, well I figured after you came home with that tablet last week, someone had beaten me to the plunge. What did you say it was? An early birthday present from one of your friends?” Now you know you’re in trouble because your friends have been invited and their exchanging puzzled expressions and shrugging before their attention returns to you. There’s a chance you could lie and say there’s another friend they know nothing about. On the other hand, lies are what got you into this mess. That and thievery.
